U.S. Federal Govn’t Info

Digital national security archive
Database contains comprehensive collections of declassified documents, and new collections will be added yearly. Data is owned by the National Security Archive.

Declassified documents reference system
The database ranges from the years immediately following World War II, when declassified documents were first made widely available, through the 1970s. Nearly every major foreign and domestic event of these years is covered: the Cold War, Vietnam, foreign policy shifts, the civil rights movement, and others.

United Nations Treaty Collection
Includes online versions of the print publications: Multilateral treaties deposited with the Secretary-General, which incorporates the detailed status of over 485 multilateral treaties, and: (United Nations) Treaty series, which contains the texts of over 30,000 bilateral and multilateral treaties in their authentic language(s), along with a translation into English and French, as appropriate, for those treaties registered with the Secretariat.

Finding United Nations Documents

AccessUN [NYU Only]
Provides access to current and retrospective United Nations documents and publications. Articles appearing in UN periodicals are individually indexed. Indexing of the bilateral and multilateral treaties in the UN Treaty Series is another unique feature of the Index.

UNBIS Net
“Catalog of UN publications and documentation indexed by the United Nations’ Dag Hammarskjöld Library in New York and the Library of the United Nations Office at Geneva. Also included are non-UN publications held in the collection of the Dag Hammarskjöld Library.” NOTE: NYU Libraries has a very large collection of U.N. documents located on the 6th floor of Bobst Library and open to the public. Use UNBIS Net to identify the documents.

Contains profiles of regions and countries; lists organizations affiliated with regions; includes bibliographies and research tools.

EIU (Economist Intelligence Unit)

Country reports
Covers 200 countries, with an emphasis on economic statistics. Updated monthly.

Country profiles
Covers 200 countries. Reports outline a country’s economic and political status and background. Updated annually.

Country risk
Updated monthly, these are country reports from a financial risk perspective.

City Data
Contains pricing information on more than 160 products and services in 123 cities worldwide, including rent.

Additional country information sources are available via the Virtual Business Library.

Finding International News Sources

Below are some sources for locating international news sources. Note that some sources include wires, some include translated materials, and others include foreign-language press.
LexisNexis

  • Includes newswires from international sources; some are in English (ex. Agence-France Presse); includes some foreign language newspapers. Does not support non-roman character searching. Does not include Russian, Chinese, or Arabic language newspapers.

Factiva

  • Includes both English and non-English newspapers and newswires. Covers more languages than LexisNexis.
  • Supports non-roman character searching
  • Search by Region (Country) to see all of the stories about that country/region; includes stories from all sources (English and non-English).
  • Search by Sources to identify and search sources from a specific region/country.
  • Be sure to change languages to ALL Languages if you want to pick up non-English. (The default is English.)

World News Connection

  • 1995-present
  • Offers translated and English language news and information that is provided to the National Technical Information Service by the Open Source Network (formerly Foreign Broadcast Information Service).
